Have you actually seen this draft? I haven't, and that film's scripts and I go back pretty far. I am the one who originally uploaded the 8-3-1973 draft at WTR in 2014. It was my scan of a hard copy that I bought at Hollywood Book & Poster well over 3 decades ago. And it has the earlier ending at the beach (before the "suits" at paramount forced them to end it in the actual Chinatown because they didn't know what a metaphor was) during the downpour and the shooting under the bait sign.
Before that posting there were only variations of the 3rd draft or undated copies without an opening V.O. around. I'm aware that Towne has described earlier drafts, but I've never seen one. And I don't think it's one of the drafts at the Herrick, as they all have fewer pages than the 8-3-1973 draft--and Towne alluded to a longer 1st draft. So, while it may exist, I don't think it's circulating.
I saw an interview with Towne once. He said the studio demanded changes, then when the studio was satisfied, Polanski demanded the ending be rewritten. When Towne refused, Polanski said 'rewrite it or you're fired '. Towne rewrote it.
It is always nice when first drafts pop up.
I am waiting for the first draft of Ridley Scott's LEGEND. WH said Scott stripped quite a few things.
